Wood is the surface where homeowners get the most conflicting advice, because the honest answer depends on something you can't see from the stain: how deep the mold went, and whether the wood is still sound. A mildew haze on a sealed tabletop wipes off and stays gone. Mold on a damp subfloor joist might clean up — or the wood beneath it might already be rotted through. Unlike drywall, where mold in the paper means the board is finished, wood is often salvageable: it can be cleaned, and where the growth went deeper, sanded back to fresh material. Three outcomes, not two
Moldy wood sorts into three situations, and naming which one you have decides everything that follows.
- Surface mold on sealed or finished wood — varnished furniture, painted trim, sealed or painted framing. The finish keeps the mold on top, so it usually wipes off.
- Mold in bare wood that is still firm — unfinished studs, joists, or subfloor that the mold has stained but not weakened. Cleanable, sometimes with light sanding to lift staining out of the grain.
- Rotted or structurally soft wood — soft, spongy, crumbling, or punky when probed. The wood itself is gone; cleaning cannot bring it back, and the piece has to be replaced.
The first two are often a reasonable homeowner job on a small area. The third is replacement, and when it involves anything load-bearing, it's work to scope with a professional.
Read the wood before you buy anything
The deciding factor is the condition of the wood, not the color of the stain. This table is the read to make first.

If you land in the top two rows on a small area, a careful cleanup is reasonable. Anything below means either replacement or a job bigger than a do-it-yourself patch.
If it's surface or shallow: cleaning wood
For a genuine surface bloom on finished wood, or a stained patch of firm bare wood, the method is the modest one the EPA recommends for any small hard surface — with two wood-specific cautions: keep water to a minimum, because wood drinks it, and dry thoroughly, because trapped moisture just restarts the growth.
- Fix the moisture first. A leak, condensation, or humidity that's still active means the mold returns no matter how well you clean. On wood this is doubly true, because damp wood is the food source.
- Protect yourself. An N-95 respirator, gloves, and goggles without vent holes. Open a window or vent a fan out of the room — never blowing across the mold, which just launches spores.
- Clean with detergent and water, scrubbing the surface rather than soaking it, then dry the wood completely. The EPA does not recommend bleach for routine cleanup, and on porous wood bleach is especially weak — its water soaks into the grain while the chlorine stays on top.
- Sand only if staining remains in bare wood. Once the surface is clean and bone-dry, light sanding can lift residual staining out of the grain of unfinished wood. Sanding raises dust, so wear the respirator and HEPA-vacuum after.
- Don't seal or paint over it. The EPA is explicit: clean up the mold and dry the surface before any finish goes on. Sealing over live mold traps it, and it keeps growing underneath.

If the wood is rotted: replacement, and where the law comes in
When wood is soft, spongy, or crumbling, you are no longer cleaning mold — you are dealing with rotted structure, and the affected wood has to be removed. Two things make this bigger than it first looks, and both point toward a licensed remediator in Florida.
First, rotted wood is usually load-bearing context. Subfloor, joists, wall studs, attic framing, and the wood under a crawlspace or basement carry the structure. Cutting out and sistering or replacing a structural member is carpentry layered on top of mold work, and getting it wrong has consequences beyond the mold.
Second, opening framing releases spores. Cutting into a moldy wall or attic without containment spreads them through the house. Doing it properly means sealing the area, controlling the dust, HEPA filtration, and verifying the cavity is clean and dry before it closes — the things that define professional remediation rather than a patch. Where Florida's licensing line falls
This is the point the wood question runs into the law. Florida regulates mold work under its Mold-Related Services law (Chapter 468, Part XVI, Florida Statutes). §468.8411 defines mold assessment and remediation, and §468.8419 sets who may perform them: remediation of an area of about 10 square feet or more must be done by a licensed mold remediator holding an MRSR license. That's roughly a 3-by-3-foot patch — and moldy framing or subfloor reaches it quickly once the structure is opened up.
So the size of the job does double duty, exactly as it does for DIY versus professional mold cleanup generally: below about 10 square feet, a contained homeowner cleanup is allowed; at or above it, Florida law requires a licensed pro, and the EPA treats it as past homeowner scope too. Because structural wood mold spreads behind surfaces, most real framing jobs land on the licensed-pro side of that line.

Don't skip the water: why the same wood molds twice
Cleaning or replacing wood without solving the moisture is the most common way homeowners spend the same money twice. Wood doesn't grow mold on its own — it grows mold because something is keeping it wet. In Florida homes that's usually a short list: a slow supply or drain leak, condensation on cold framing, air-conditioning leaving the space humid, a roof or flashing leak wetting attic wood, or ground moisture under a poorly sealed crawlspace. Can you get mold out of wood, or does it have to be replaced?
It depends on how deep the mold has gone and whether the wood is still sound. Wood is porous, but unlike the paper face of drywall it can often be cleaned and, where needed, sanded back to clean material. Mold on a sealed or finished surface — varnished furniture, painted trim, sealed framing — usually wipes off with detergent and water if you dry it fully afterward. Mold that has penetrated bare wood can sometimes be removed by cleaning and then lightly sanding the surface. What cannot be saved is wood that has gone soft, spongy, crumbling, or visibly rotted: at that point the moisture has destroyed the wood itself, and the affected piece — a stud, a section of subfloor, a length of trim — has to be cut out and replaced.
Does bleach kill mold on wood?
Bleach is the wrong tool for wood. The EPA does not recommend chlorine bleach for routine mold cleanup, and on a porous material like wood it is especially poor: the chlorine stays near the surface while its water soaks into the grain — and water is what mold needs to keep growing. Bleaching moldy wood often lightens the stain for a few weeks before it returns from deeper in the grain. The EPA-recommended method for a small patch is detergent and water, scrubbing the surface, then drying it thoroughly. Does vinegar kill mold on wood?
White vinegar is a reasonable mild option for a small surface patch, and it is gentler on wood than bleach, but it is oversold online as a cure-all. It can help clean a light bloom on finished or bare wood, yet it does nothing about mold that has already grown into the grain, and it does not address the moisture that caused the problem. Treat vinegar as one acceptable cleaner for a small job — not as a substitute for drying the wood, finding the water source, or removing wood that is structurally gone.
Can mold on framing or studs be cleaned, or does the wood need replacing?
Structural framing is usually salvageable if the wood is still firm. Mold on the surface of solid studs or joists can often be cleaned and HEPA-vacuumed, and stubborn staining sanded back, because the mold is feeding on the surface rather than rotting the member. The test is strength, not color: press and probe the wood. If it is firm and a screwdriver does not sink in, surface mold can typically be removed and the framing kept; if the wood is soft, punky, or crumbles, rot has set in and that section has to be replaced. How do I know if mold has rotted the wood?
Look past the stain and test the wood itself. Surface mold leaves discoloration but the wood underneath stays hard. Rot — caused by the same chronic moisture — leaves the wood soft, spongy, darkened through, stringy or crumbly, and a screwdriver or awl pushes in with little resistance. Stained-but-firm wood can usually be cleaned and kept; soft or punky wood has lost its structure and must be replaced regardless of how the surface looks after cleaning.
