How to Remove Mold from Insulation (When to Clean It vs. Replace It)

Most home insulation is porous, so mold that grows in it can't be reliably cleaned — moldy fiberglass batts, blown-in cellulose, and mineral wool are removed and replaced, not scrubbed. Only non-porous rigid foam board and closed-cell spray foam can be surface-cleaned. In every case, find and stop the water first.

Insulation is one of the sneakier places mold shows up, because you almost never see it happening. It sits inside attics, wall cavities, and crawlspaces — the exact parts of a Florida house where moisture collects out of sight — and by the time a musty smell or a stain gives it away, the growth is often well established. The good news is that the decision about what to do is simpler than for most surfaces. With insulation, you are not usually choosing how to clean it. You are choosing whether it can be cleaned at all — and for most types, the honest answer is that it can't, and it comes out. This guide is about telling the two situations apart and handling each one correctly.

First, the one rule that decides everything: is it porous?

Every other question about moldy insulation follows from a single property of the material: whether it's porous. Mold doesn't just sit on top of a porous material — its filaments grow down into it, which is why you can't scrub it back out. The EPA's guidance on moldy materials draws exactly this line: hard, non-porous surfaces can be cleaned, while porous materials that have grown mold generally have to be removed and thrown away. Most insulation falls on the porous side of that line.

Here's how the common types sort out.

Read the table top to bottom and the pattern is clear: the fluffy, absorbent, fibrous insulations — the ones most homes are full of — come out when they mold, while the dense foam products can be wiped down and left in place. If you're not sure which you have, the test is simple: if you can squeeze it and it compresses like a sponge or a blanket, treat it as porous and plan to replace it.

If it has to come out: removing moldy insulation

Once you've decided a porous batt or a run of blown-in insulation is coming out, the removal itself is a contained-demolition job, not a scrub job. The goal is to get the moldy material into sealed bags without launching a cloud of spores and fibers through the house.

  1. Find and stop the water first. Insulation only molds when something keeps it wet — a roof leak dripping onto attic batts, condensation on cold AC lines or ductwork, a plumbing leak inside a wall, or humid air driving into an unvented crawlspace. Tear out wet insulation before the source is fixed and the new batts mold too.
  2. Protect yourself. A properly fitted N-95 or half-face respirator, gloves, goggles without vent holes, and long sleeves — fiberglass and mineral wool shed irritating fibers on top of the mold. Work in a contained area and vent a fan out of the space, never across the material.
  3. Bag it as you pull it, don't dry-scrape. Gently lift the moldy insulation out and double-bag it in heavy contractor bags right where it sits; disturbing dry, moldy insulation sends a cloud of spores and fibers into the air. Seal each bag before you carry it through the house — and don't clean it up with a household shop vac, which just blows the spores back out.
  4. Clean and dry the surface behind it. The framing, sheathing, or wall cavity the insulation sat against is usually a hard surface you can treat with the EPA small-area method — detergent and water, scrub, dry. That's where cleaning belongs; the insulation itself is going in the bag.
  5. Re-insulate only after it's dry. New insulation installed against damp framing, or under a leak you haven't solved, is just the next thing to mold. Dry the space, confirm the water is gone, then put fresh insulation back.

Where Florida's licensing line falls

Insulation reaches Florida's licensing threshold faster than almost any other material, because it covers such large areas. Florida regulates mold work under its Mold-Related Services law (Chapter 468, Part XVI, Florida Statutes). §468.8411 defines mold assessment and remediation, and §468.8419 sets who may perform them: remediation of an area of about 10 square feet or more must be done by a licensed mold remediator holding an MRSR license. That's roughly a 3-by-3-foot area — and an attic bay, a wall cavity, or a crawlspace run of moldy insulation passes it easily. There's a Florida-specific reason moldy insulation is such a common find here, too. Florida attics run brutally hot and humid, cold AC ducts and refrigerant lines sweat in that heat, and a lot of homes sit over crawlspaces that breathe damp outdoor air — all of which soaks the insulation from the back where no one is looking. After a storm, a breached roof drips straight onto attic batts. The moisture is the whole game

With insulation, even more than with a hard surface, the material is almost never the real problem — the water is. Insulation is passive; it molds only because it's the thing sitting in the path of moisture no one dealt with. So pulling and replacing a moldy batt while leaving the leak, the sweating duct, or the humid crawlspace in place doesn't fix anything. It resets the clock on the exact same failure.

A musty smell with no visible patch, insulation that molds again after you've already replaced it, or staining that keeps returning on a ceiling below the attic are all the same signal: the water source is still open. Moldy insulation is mostly a removal decision, not a cleaning one, and the deciding factor is whether the material is porous. Can you clean mold off insulation, or does it have to be replaced?

It depends entirely on whether the insulation is porous. Most home insulation is — fiberglass batts, blown-in cellulose, and mineral wool all hold dust, trap moisture, and, in the case of faced batts and cellulose, contain organic material mold can feed on. Once mold is growing in porous insulation you cannot reliably clean it out, because the growth is down in the material, not just on top; the accepted approach is to remove and replace it. The exception is non-porous insulation — rigid foam board and closed-cell spray foam — where mold grows only as a surface film on dust or facing and can be wiped off, leaving the foam in place if it is dry and sound. Either way, the durable fix is stopping the water, not the cleaning.

Does moldy fiberglass insulation need to be removed?

In practice, yes. The glass fibers themselves are inorganic and don't feed mold, but a fiberglass batt is rarely just glass: most batts carry a Kraft-paper or foil facing that is organic, and the fluffy fiber traps household dust that mold grows on readily. On top of that, a batt that has been wet enough to mold has usually matted down and lost much of its R-value, so it isn't doing its job anymore. Between the mold you can't scrub out of the fibers and the insulation value you've already lost, removing and replacing a moldy, wet batt is almost always the right call rather than trying to salvage it.

Can mold grow on spray foam or rigid foam board?

Mold does not feed on closed-cell spray foam or rigid foam board — both are non-porous and water-resistant, which is exactly why they survive a moisture event better than fiberglass or cellulose. What you sometimes see is a thin film of mold growing on the layer of dust, dirt, or paper facing sitting on the foam's surface, not in the foam itself. That surface growth wipes off with detergent and water, and the foam can stay in place if it's dry and structurally sound. But treat any mold on foam as a flag: it means moisture reached that spot, so find and fix the water source before you consider the job done.

How much moldy insulation can I remove myself in Florida?

Florida's mold licensing law uses a roughly 10-square-foot line, and it applies to insulation the same as any other material. Under Chapter 468, Part XVI of the Florida Statutes (§468.8411 defines mold assessment and remediation; §468.8419 governs who may perform them), remediation of an area of about 10 square feet or more must be done by a licensed mold remediator holding an MRSR license. A small patch of batt in a closet or a corner of the garage falls below that line. But insulation covers whole attics, wall cavities, and crawlspaces, so a moldy run of it reaches the threshold fast — and attics and crawlspaces add heat, confined access, and airborne-fiber issues that push the job toward a licensed pro regardless of size.

Why does my insulation keep getting moldy?

Recurring mold in insulation almost always means the water never stopped. Insulation is a sponge that lives in the parts of a house where moisture collects unseen — attics under a slow roof leak, wall cavities around a weeping pipe, crawlspaces breathing humid outdoor air, or ceilings and chases where cold ductwork sweats. Replace the insulation without solving that moisture and the fresh batts absorb the same water and mold again in the same place. If you have torn out and re-insulated a spot more than once, stop replacing and have the area checked for its moisture source — a roof, a plumbing leak, condensation, or crawlspace humidity — before you put anything new back.
